Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs of English are those verbs that do not follow thegeneral rule of formation of the Past and Past Participle. The formation of the Past and the Past Participle, according to thegeneral rule that applies to all other verbs, is through the suffix-ed.Therefore, every verb that does not follow this pattern, it isclassified as irregular.

Interestingly, the irregularity of English verbs manifests itself only in the forms of the Past and the Past Participle, not in conjugaçãoothe same as in Portuguese. The only English verbs which also have an irregular conjugation is the verb to be and the modal auxiliary verbs (can, May, might, Shall, Should, must, etc.)..

It is also interesting to note that, with respect to frequency, the Pastis more important for the student than the Past Participle. While thePast is one of the basic grammatical structures, the Past Participleoccurs only in the Perfect Tense in the formation of the Passive Voice and the adjective form of the verb.
